Who Is Emma Corrin? Netflix's 'The Crown' Announces Casting of Actor to Play Princess Diana in Since-Deleted Tweet

Although Season 3 has yet to air, Netflix has confirmed production is already underway for Season 4 of The Crown and (briefly) announced the actor cast in the role of Lady Diana Spencer via Twitter on Tuesday: newcomer Emma Corrin. The tweet was removed from the show's official account hours after it was posted.

This is the first major role for the British actress and Corrin confirmed the news to her followers that she was "overjoyed, over the moon and incredibly honored."

"I have been glued to the show and to think I'm now joining this incredibly talented acting family is surreal," Corrin said in a statement. "Princess Diana was an icon and her effect on the world remain profound and inspiring. To explore her through Peter Morgan's writing is the most exceptional opportunity and I will strive to do her justice."

Gillian Anderson has also reportedly been cast as Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, according to IndieWire. Netflix has yet to specify the precise period of time Season 4 will cover, but production is slated to start "later this year."

The Crown's official Twitter account made the announcement Tuesday morning but has since deleted the tweet.

Newsweek reached out to Netflix for comment about but did not hear back at the time of publication.

Season 3's release date has not been confirmed but will reportedly premiere some time this year. Academy Award-winning actress Olivia Coleman will appear in the upcoming season as Queen Elizabeth II.

The Crown's showrunner, Peter Morgan, has remained tight-lipped about what exactly will be covered during the series's third installment; however, Josh O'Connor, who plays the young Prince Charles, gave a sneak peek.

"We start off with Charles at Cambridge University, that's where we bring him into the series," he told Radio Times. "This is where we scale a significant part of his life which I feel so honored and excited to tell the story. And tell a very different side of the story that we may not have seen or have known about."
