The ever-so-creepy presence of Teddy Perkins attending the 70th annual Primetime Emmy Awards on Monday began to trend on Twitter Monday. Yet, those who don't watch FX's acclaimed series Atlanta may not know that the person behind the character is none other than Donald Glover.
As Bill Hader won an Emmy for lead actor in a comedy series, for his part on HBO's Barry, he hugged a man before taking to the stage to accept his trophy. That man was Glover's fictional persona, Teddy.
The sixth episode of Atlanta Season 2, titled "Teddy Perkins," aired commercial-free. During this episode, Darius (Lakeith Stanfield) ventured for a free piano he came across on the internet and he winds up at a mansion in the middle of nowhere that belongs to Teddy—an awfully skinny man with bleached skin who greets Darius at the door.
"Initially, I had no idea that Teddy Perkins was actually played by Donald Glover," actor Derrick Haywood, who plays Benny Hope in the episode, told Vulture in April.
While filming this Darius-centered episode, Haywood claimed the multihyphenate talent was in full-character on set.
"The director [Hiro Murai] called 'Teddy' over [on set] and said, 'Let's see what Teddy thinks,'" Haywood explained to Vulture. "I'm like, 'Okay, who is this Teddy guy and why is his opinion so important?' When I say this guy was in character the whole time, it was just amazing the commitment he brought. We were calling him Teddy, he acted as Teddy—there was no Donald on set whatsoever."
Glover did reappear at the ceremony as himself after the brief onscreen spotting as Teddy. For all audience members know, Teddy could've been played by a double.
