Katy Perry has found herself in hot water with American Idol fans after reportedly being observed glued to her phone instead of actively interacting with the audience during a taping.
The top eight contestants performed on the singing competition show on Monday, April 29. Fans noticed Perry's alleged attention to her phone, according to a report from The Sun.
"It was off-putting to see how she was so into her phone and ignored fans who were shouting her name," an insider told the outlet. Although the "Teenage Dream" singer showed and voiced her opinion after each performance on camera, fans claimed she was "glued to her phone" for every commercial break.
The insider also shared that "fans shouted, 'Katy! Katy!" and, 'We love you Katy!' and if anything, she would quickly turn around to glance at them, but then went back to texting."
In February, Perry announced her departure from American Idol, marking the end of her seven-season tenure as a judge. "I love 'Idol' so much, it's connected me with the heart of America," the "California Gurls" vocalist shared on Jimmy Kimmel Live. "But I feel like I need to go out to feel that pulse of my own beat."
The replacement judge has yet to be announced, and both judge Luke Bryan and host Ryan Seacrest shared their opinions on potential candidates, including Meghan Trainor, who made a guest appearance as a host on the show.
When prompted about the possibility of Trainor stepping in as a replacement for Perry, Bryan responded, "I think Meghan's always been real fun. You know, that's kinda been her brand, to have fun." He also told Entertainment Tonight that, that "[She's] real witty, so certainly."
However, the country star also revealed that he has at least "10 names" to pitch to the show's producers. As for Seacrest, he agreed with Bryan's idea of Trainor joining the crew. "She was very good," he said. "Meghan is a super talent, too, and she's got a great sense of humor. She's fun and she's spontaneous."
