Why are the Girl Scouts Suing the Boy Scouts?

Months after the Boys Scouts of America announced an impending to change to the organization's name, the Girl Scouts are suing over the shift.

The Girl Scouts of the USA filed a trademark infringement lawsuit on Tuesday in Manhattan federal court.

CNN reports that the suit from the Girl Scouts stems from the Boy Scouts not having the right to use "scouts" or "scouting."

The Boy Scouts of America announced earlier this year that they would drop "boy" from the name of the organization in 2019, rebranding to become Scouts, BSA.

The Girl Scouts lawsuit says that the organization's brand and activities will be sidelined by the new program.

In a report by Reuters, the Girl Scouts added that the Boy Scouts name change has created confusion for the public, including many thinking that the Girl Scouts no longer exist or have merged with the Boy Scouts.

The Boy Scouts have already begun to accept girls into the Cub Scouts and Eagle Scouts programs.

The Boy Scouts program, traditionally targeting boys ages 11-17, does not accept girls into the program but plans to start in 2019.

"We applaud every organization that builds character and leadership in children, including the Girl Scouts of the USA, and believe that there is an opportunity for both organizations to serve girls and boys in our communities," The Boy Scouts said in a statement to CNN.

The Girl Scouts of the USA are seeking damages and a permanent injunction from trademark infringement.

The Boy Scouts are currently reviewing the lawsuit, the organization told CNN.
