Remembering William Goldman: Screenwriter's Best Quotes From 'The Princess Bride'

It was 1973 when William Goldman captured hearts across the globe with his romantic fantasy novel The Princess Bride. Nearly 15 years later the author and screenwriter brought the tales of the mythical city of Florin to the big screen with The Princess Bride film adaptation.

Goldman, who died on Thursday, entertained the masses for nearly seven decades. However, it was the love, adventure and comedy of Inigo Montoya, Fezzik, Vizzini and Buttercup that stole hearts of many and inevitably changed the way fantasy was brought to life on the big screen.

See a few of Goldman's best quotes from The Princess Bride below.

“Death cannot stop true love. All it can do is delay it for a while.” – The Princess Bride

"Do I love you? My God, if your love were a grain of sand, mine would be a universe of beaches."

"Your true love lives. And you marry another. True Love saved her in the Fire Swamp, and she treated it like garbage. And that's what she is, the Queen of Refuse. So bow down to her if you want, bow to her. Bow to the Queen of Slime, the Queen of Filth, the Queen of Putrescence. Boo. Boo. Rubbish. Filth. Slime. Muck. Boo. Boo. Boo."

"I just want you to feel you're doing well. I hate for people to die embarrassed."

"Do you want me to follow you for the rest of your days? I will do that. Do you want me to crawl? I will crawl. I will be quiet for you or sing for you, or if you are hungry, let me bring you food, or if you have thirst and nothing will quench it but Arabian wine, I will go to Araby, even though it is across the world, and bring a bottle back for your lunch. Anything there is that I can do for you, I will do for you; anything there is that I cannot do, I will learn to do.

William Goldman wasn't just a narrative genius. He was s lyricist when it came to dialogue. There's a reason we go to All the Presidents Men to describe our current era, or why everyone has a favorite line from the Princess Bride. This is a tough loss. pic.twitter.com/sSVNgTZT4u

"Her heart was a secret garden and the walls were very high."

"Love is many things none of them logical."

"Cynics are simply thwarted romantics."

RIP William Goldman. He wrote a lot of great lines in movies like All the President's Men and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. But this line from The Princess Bride might be his most memorable one... pic.twitter.com/e1ZvZYjp6t

"I do not envy you the headache you will have when you awake. But for now, rest well and dream of large women."

"Tyrone, you know how much I love watching you work, but I've got my country's 500th anniversary to plan, my wedding to arrange, my wife to murder and Guilder to frame for it; I'm swamped."

"Please consider me as an alternative to suicide."

Upon hearing of the passing of William Goldman, I remember my clerking days when I cited to The Princess Bride in an opinion for the quote "I do not think it means what you think it means." It didn't make it into the final draft, Bill, but I tried. #AppellateTwitter #law

"I've been saying it so long to you, you just wouldn't listen. Every time you said 'Farm Boy do this' you thought I was answering 'As you wish' but that's only because you were hearing wrong. 'I love you' was what it was, but you never heard."

"As you wish..."

"This is my favorite book in all the world, though I have never read it."
