'Winning Time' Season 2: Everything To Know About the HBO Series

The first season of Winning Time: The Rise of the LA Lakers may have finished, but HBO has already confirmed there will be a Season 2 to look forward to.

The basketball biopic received positive reviews from critics and audiences but has recently courted controversy from the real-life people depicted in Winning Time. Jerry West demanded a retraction for how he was portrayed by Jason Clarke while Kareem Abdul-Jabbar called the show "deliberately dishonest."

The comedy-drama, which was co-produced by Adam McKay and stars the likes of John C. Reilly and newcomers Quincy Isaiah and Solomon Hughes, will definitely return for Season 2—but when?

When will Winning Time Season 2 air?

HBO announced that Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty would return for Season 2 on April 7, 2022, halfway through the first season.

At the time Francesca Orsi, executive vice president of HBO programming, said: "We can't wait to see how this team will tell the next chapter of this dynasty."

HBO has not yet put a date on when Season 2 will air. Season 1 faced huge production delays due to the coronavirus pandemic so hopefully the second season won't face the same issues and instead will be broadcast in 2023.

How many seasons of Winning Time will there be?

Season 1 of Winning Time just managed to scratch the surface of the LA Lakers' story from the 1970s and 1980s as they began their dominance of the NBA. Season 2 is also unlikely to tell the full story so we should expect to see more episodes of the show down the years if the audience wants it.

"There's so much story to tell," Winning Time co-writer and co-executive producer Rodney Barnes told Newsweek. "Especially when you look at that period of where we start with Magic's HIV diagnosis in the pilot.

"There's so much stuff that happens in between—like a Shakespearean tragedy. With the players, there's the Larry Bird-Magic Johnson rivalry, the Celtic-Laker rivalry, we've got a lot more story to tell."

In terms of where the story will finish, Barnes thinks we could follow the team into the 1990s and beyond because of the characters introduced in Winning Time. "Theoretically, we could go into the Shaq and Kobe years," he said, "Because a lot of those folks Jerry West, Magic Johnson, Dr. Buss, Jeanie Buss, they still stay with the team, you know, from this era to the next era. So there's no reason why we would have to stop unless someone told us to stop."

Writer and actor Tracie Letts starred in Winning Time as coach Jack McKinney. He's just as excited as Barnes to continue the story, "The story's untold you know. "We only got to like the first two chapters maybe. There's a lot of drama that happens with my character. There's a lot of drama that happens with Westhead said Jason Segal's character, a lot of things that happen with all of our characters. I would be honored and humbled to go back."

"I'll do whatever is asked to me. This is one of the truly one of the best experiences of my career," Segal agreed with Letts sentiment.

Episodes of Winning Time aired on HBO but now that the first season has wrapped up, with the finale airing on May 8, 2022, the entire first season is available to binge.
