School Gave Bully 'Slap On The Hand' For Photoshopping Teen As a Slave, Student's Mother Says

A mother from Springfield, Missouri, says she does not agree with the punishment the school district gave a bully who allegedly edited a photo to depict her son as a slave.

Kierra Nabors told KY3 that school officials at Cherokee Middle School she did not agree with the punishment the school gave a bully who allegedly photo-shopped Nabors 8th grade son, Isaiah, being branded as a slave by the school's principal. The photos obtained by KY3 circulated on social media with the caption "slave branding."

"I'm not shocked, I'm disgusted, but I'm not shocked," Nabors told the news station.

The school told KY3 that the student who created the photos was disciplined, but did not go into detail how. Nabors believed the teen should have been expelled for his actions.

"He wasn't expelled. Isaiah still sees him at school," Nabors said. "He's still there, so how is that zero tolerance? To me he got a slap on the hand."

Newsweek has reached out to Springfield Public Schools for comment on the incident but did not hear back in time for publication. In a statement to KY3, Springfield Public Schools Chief Communications Officer Stephen Hall described how the situation would be handled.

"The administrator would meet with the student and parent or guardian and deal with that situation and establish discipline which would include in-school suspension, up to out of school suspension and it can include up to three days of out of school suspension according to our handbook," Hall told the news station.

Hall also said the district would continue to investigate if students continue this kind of behavior.

"If students are participating in that type of behavior, we will investigate it and make sure that that activity ceases and that is what has happened in this case," he said.

In March 2017, a substitute teacher in New Jersey held a mock slave auction. The teacher at Jefferson School in Maplewood held the auction just a few weeks after parents had expressed disgust over a fifth-grade class at South Mountain Elementary School in South Orange, WCBS-TV previously reported. Both schools are part of the South Orange Maplewood School District in Essex County in Newark, New Jersey.
