Woman, 80, Mauled To Death in Vicious Attack: Police

An 80-year-old woman in California was mauled to death in a dog attack, according to police.

Officers from Victor Valley Sheriff's Station were first alerted to reports of an attack somewhere in the area of Vinton Street and Mesa Road, in Baldy Mesa, at about 11:09 a.m. local time on Friday, October 7.

When the officers arrived, they found Soon Han unresponsive on the roadway. Police later learned she had been attacked by dogs, according to a statement from San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department (SBCSD).

According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, more than 4.5 million people are bitten by dogs each year in the U.S. and at least half are children.

It added that more than 800,000 people in the country receive medical attention every year for dog bites in the country.

An SBCSD spokesperson said in a news release: "Through information gathered during the preliminary investigation, investigators believe Han was out for a walk when she was attacked by two dogs from a nearby home.

"Han suffered major injuries during the attack and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The dog owner was located and is cooperating with the investigation."

The police news release continued: "San Bernadino County Animal Control responded to the location and took custody of the dogs."

Police confirmed the dogs were of the Dogo Argentino breed and that they will be held until an investigation into the attack is completed.

Earlier in October, family dogs mauled a toddler and a baby to death in a Tennessee home, according to the Shelby County Sheriff's Office.

The victims, a 2-year-old girl, and a 5-month-old boy, were attacked inside a home on Sylvan Road at about 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 5, police said

Both children died at the scene after they succumbed to their injuries, police told Fox13.

In September, a 9-year-old boy was left with serious injuries after he was attacked by a pack of dogs in Alabama, police said.

The Lawrence County Sheriff's Office said five dogs attacked Gavin Peoples while he was riding a bike on Lawrence County Road 582.

Residents were able to save Peoples and give him first aid until emergency responders arrived.
