Woman 'Intentionally' Shot Her Infant Granddaughter in the Head: Sheriff

An Ohio woman was charged after she shot her 6-month-old granddaughter in the head "intentionally," police said.

The baby girl remains hospitalized in critical condition after the Saturday morning shooting, Butler County Sheriff's Office (BCSO) said in an online statement.

Mia Desiree Harris, 43, has been charged with three counts of felonious assault, according to BCSO Sheriff Richard K. Jones, who noted that the charges are subject to change as the investigation continues. She's currently being held on a $1.5 million bond.

Shortly before 2 a.m. Saturday, BCSO deputies responded to a report of an infant being shot at 6835 Dutch View Court in the Cincinnati suburb of Liberty Township, Jones said.

Newsweek reached out via email and Facebook on Monday to BCSO for comment and an update on the case. Online court records did not list an attorney for Harris who could speak on her behalf at the time of publication.

After arriving on the scene, deputies discovered that the infant had been shot in the head, according to the sheriff. The child was found in "critical condition," and was transported to University of Cincinnati West Chester Hospital for treatment, Jones said.

Harris had left before deputies arrived, but she was "located and arrested without incident a short time later," Jones said.

The sheriff confirmed that Harris is the grandmother of the baby who was wounded in the shooting and was identified by witnesses as the shooter.

He said some sort of an argument among family members led to Harris grabbing a gun and shooting.

"During the incident, Harris shot at several family members before intentionally shooting the child," Jones said.

Harris allegedly "broke down" a locked bedroom door, after firing a gun through it "multiple times," according to the affidavit filed in Butler County Area 2 Court.

After breaking down the door, Harris pointed the gun at her granddaughter and shot the baby in the face, the court documents state.

"She went and shot this child and doesn't appear to have any remorse whatsoever," Jones told local station WXIX on Saturday.

In addition to shooting the 6-month-old, Harris also "knowingly" caused "serious physical harm" to another victim, whose name was not disclosed, by "striking [that person] in the face with a fist," the documents allege.

The sheriff told WXIX that the shooting was "one of the worst things" he's ever seen.

"This is one of the most disgusting, vile criminal acts I've ever seen, shooting a 6-month-old baby," Jones told the local station. "What makes it even worse is this is the baby's grandmother."

He said the baby girl had undergone multiple surgeries and was still in critical condition. An update on her condition was not available at the time of publication.

"The baby is hanging onto life as we speak. It's in God's hands now. We should all pray for this 6-month-old baby," the sheriff told WXIX.
