Woman's 'Oasis' Garden Delights Internet: 'All of This Is My Dream'

Gardening has grown in popularity since the start of the pandemic. According to Garden Pals, as many as 18.3 million people in the U.S.—many of whom are millennials—have taken it up as a hobby in the past few years.

Recently, a Reddit post has made the rounds on the internet after a user shared a photo of her "oasis"-like garden.

A Redditor under the username u/theunlikelyfloof posted the image on the r/gardening subreddit, captioning it: "My garden this evening finally feels like a little oasis." Since it was shared, the post has accumulated over 8,000 upvotes and received 174 comments from fellow users.

Newsweek spoke to the Redditor—who wished to remain anonymous—about her gardening project and how she and her fiancé managed to build their dream garden from scratch.

According to the OP (original poster), her gardening project began shortly after moving into her current home in August 2019. "The yard had so much potential but needed some love," she told Newsweek.

"I've always wanted a 'secret garden feel,'" she said. "We live in New England and I always think of cottage gardens with delicate flowers and many butterflies and bumblebees enjoying the blooms. I wanted to emulate that."

Over the course of three summers, the OP and her fiancé spent hours redoing the flower beds by "digging up all the stone edging and relaying them."

According to u/theunlikelyfloof, all of the plants in their backyard are perennials. "Not only did we want an aesthetically pleasing yard, we wanted one that would support our local wildlife," she said.

"We often see hummingbirds, gold finches, many types of butterflies, bumble bees, honey bees and even elusive hummingbird moths," the OP added. "We enjoy our pollinator visitors and they enjoy our garden; it's a win-win."

The OP also noted that her garden project included some DIY—the patio chairs seen in the Reddit post were acquired for free and given a makeover, turning them from "a dull hunter green to cheery baby blue and white."

"We did all the work and planning ourselves and now we can enjoy the fruits (flowers?) of our labors!" she shared.

In the social media post's accompanying comment section, people expressed their amazement at the OP's garden.

"It looks extremely inviting. Like a place for a single malt, deep thoughts and belly laughs with friends!" one user wrote.

"This looks like a beautiful fever dream, not a real image. I'm beyond jealous lol," commented another Redditor.

A significant number of commenters also took the time to point out that the OP's dog, Luna, was captured in the photograph as a blur, likely due to her movement.

"I love the ghost floof," joked one user.

"All of this is my dream. Blurry dog too. Well done! This is beautiful," wrote another.

This wasn't the first time that a Redditor's home improvement project captured the internet's attention. Previously, Newsweek covered a story about a man who transformed the "dead space" in his basement into the wine cellar of his dreams. On another occasion, Newsweek wrote about a homeowner's stunning DIY home office transformation.
