Three years after World War Z first unleashed a zombie apocalypse in movie theaters, a second coming is in the works.

The project could reunite star and producer Brad Pitt with acclaimed director David Fincher. The pair previously worked together on 1990s classics Seven and Fight Club, and the Oscar-nominated The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, released in 2008.

Variety reported that Pitt has been meeting with various directors to helm the film after J.A. Bayona, director of 2012's tsunami disaster movie The Impossible, dropped out. Discussions between the old friends have been ongoing in recent weeks.

The project is expected to shoot in early 2017.

Should Fincher come on board, it would be his first feature film since 2014's Gone Girl, based on Gillian Flynn's best-selling thriller. That film earned star Rosamund Pike a Best Actress Oscar nomination in 2015.

World War Z had a rocky road to release in 2013 amid costly reshoots leading to suspicions about the quality of the film. However, the zombie outbreak movie earned positive reviews and grossed $540 million worldwide—the highest haul of Pitt's career.

At the time of its release, Pitt said he largely made the gory film so his three sons with wife Angelina Jolie—Pax, Maddox and Knox—could watch him on the big screen.

The original World War Z was directed by Marc Forster, best known for 2008 James Bond adventure Quantum of Solace.
