World Whisky Day 2019: Best Spirits to Celebrate Global Holiday

While the Irish and Scots are still arguing over the true origin of Whisky—both countries claim the historic spirit's provenance—people across the globe are just happy to know the strong, mahogany-colored drink exists. That will especially be the case on World Whisky Day on Saturday, during which fans of the fermented grain mash beverage will come together to sip glass after glass of their favorite whiskies.

The holiday is meant to be celebrated by anyone who appreciates a quality whisky—or whiskey, depending on where you're from—regardless of where the distilled beverage is made.

There's plenty of options to celebrate the spirit, too, since whisky is produced in many more places than just Ireland and Scotland. We've compiled a couple of whiskies from various corners of the map that are worth trying on World Whisky Day. Check out the full list below.

Cheers! @WorldWhiskyDay is now well underway across the world and heading to our Scottish HQ tomorrow. I’m getting in the mood with a sweet and refreshing @BalconesWhisky Texas Rye & Ginger Ale... but check out our official WWD Cocktail tomoz! pic.twitter.com/26jdMyIiWI

Four Roses Kentucky Bourbon Whiskey

A no-nonsense Whiskey, this U.S. blend is simple and straight to the point. It's good; weightless in its drinkability and mellow in its long finish. On the nose, it smells of fruit and florals freshly plucked and drizzled in honey while on the palate, it develops into sophisticated tastes of wood-grilled apples, pears and toasted spice. Retails for about $20.

Proper Twelve

There's no guarantee if drinking Proper Twelve Irish Whiskey will give you the strength of an MMA fighter like it's creator Conor McGregor, but the triple-distilled blend of grain and single malt may, at least, make you feel like you do. Golden-hued and saturated with notes of vanilla, honey and toasted wood, this Whiskey is complex and structured. Proper Twelve retails for about $25.

Bain's Cape Mountain Whisky

Made from 100-percent South African yellow maize, Bain's vibrates with toffee and vanilla aromas but it's all splish-splash citrus and spice on the palate. For it to be hailed the World's Best Grain Whisky at the 2018 World Whisky Awards, it's not a bank breaker either. Bain's retails for about $25.

Johnnie Walker Black Label

Is there really any such thing as a Whisky list without a Johnnie Walker appearance? No, there is not. Retails for about $35.

I.W. Harper Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

Comprised of approximately 73 percent corn, 18 percent rye and 9 percent barley, this Whiskey is the belle of the ball—fun, lively and full of personality, the one everyone wants but only a real special few can stand in its presence. While those caramel-sweet vanilla notes everyone loves Whiskey for are certainly present, I.W. Harper blossoms into rich and creamy beauty on the palate, fully loaded with hints of spices perfectly roasted over an open wood flame. It's a great Whiskey for drinking neat, but it's also a great Whiskey for making cocktails too. Retails for about $40.

Writers Tears Irish Whiskey

Light and sweet, this blend of single malt and aged single pot still whiskey is a perfect introduction to Irish Whiskey for newbies while a beloved go-to for longtime drinkers. It's an easy to drink Whiskey, exuding notes of honey covered oats as it blossoms into a mature, golden and oaky standout. The warming and long lingering finish is an added bonus. Retails for about $40.

Suntory Toki

Do you like your Whisky clear gold? Do you like it unique and bursting with hints of basil and grapefruit and thyme? Do you like it light and smooth, flowing down your throat with the same ease of water, but still flavorful, enjoyable? If the answer to any of these questions is yes, then please, do yourself a favor and try one of Japan's most prominent single malt scotches. Retails for about $50.

The Dalmore 12-Year

Excellence, prestige, class, superiority—these are just a few words that come to mind when considering the eloquently smooth taste of the Dalmore 12. It's dry but textured body flavored with roasted nuts and dried fruits soaked in that usual Whisky vanilla and spiced oak notes feel as rich in the mouth as the Whisky tastes making its way down the esophagus. It's no wonder The Dalmore distillery is one of Scotland's most renowned single malts, the liquor brand has produced the high-quality Whisky—and some of the world's most expensive—since it was first founded in 1839 by Alexander Matheson. Dalmore 12 retails for about $70.
