World's Largest McDonald's Closing to Make Way for Even Larger McDonald's

What's more American than a 12,000-square-foot McDonald's in Orlando, Florida? How about a 19,000-square-foot McDonald's in Orlando, Florida? On Wednesday night, the 12,000-square-foot restaurant, the largest of its kind, closed its doors in anticipation of the February opening of the 19,000-foot-version that is being constructed next door. Since it opened in 1976, the recently shuttered McDonald's has been a tourist attraction and mecca of sorts for fast-food fans with some time to kill during their trip to Disney World. Open 24 hours a day, seven days a week and 365 days a year, the restaurant, which was famously shaped like a box of french fries, featured not only a PlayPlace but also bowling, an arcade, animatronic robots and more.

But for the fast-food industry, the times they are a-changin', and McDonald's deemed the 40-year-old building no longer suitable for one of the brand's signature locations. There's no word yet on what attractions the new 19,000-square-foot restaurant will contain, but it will feature the self-serve kiosks that allow patrons to customize their orders without the burden of talking to a human being.
