One of the biggest rivalries in U.S. sports could soon be transported across the Atlantic.

According to Bloomberg, the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox are close to reach an agreement to play a two-game series in London from next year.

Unnamed sources cited by the report suggested the two-game series will be played at the London Stadium, the same venue that hosted the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2012 Olympic Games.

Located in the eastern part of the capital, the stadium is the home of Premier League club West Ham United and was also used during the 2015 Rugby World Cup and the 2017 Athletics World Championships.

The MLB has played games in Australia, Mexico and Japan, with the Yankees playing their first game of the 2004 season against the Tampa Bay Rays in Tokyo, while the Red Sox opened their 2008 season with two games against the Oakland Athletics in the Japanese capital.

However, the MLB has not yet ventured into the European market, a bridge that has already been crossed by the NBA and the NFL, who have both made a visit to the British capital a tradition.

The NBA has staged at least one regular season in London's O2 Arena since the 2010-2011 season—with the exception of the 2011-2012 campaign—while the NFL first staged a league game in London in 2007.

Wembley Stadium hosted one NFL regular season game a year until 2013, when the number grew to two and then to the current three 12 months later. This year, the London venue will host two matches, with the Philadelphia Eagles taking on the Jacksonville Jaguars, while the Tennessee Titans will play the Los Angeles Chargers.

The two games will be played on October 21 and 28, while the Oakland Raiders and the Seattle Seahawks will face off at the soon-to-be-finished Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on 14 October.
