Dog Has Best Reaction to Hearing Owner's Voice on Security Camera Intercom

A pet owner captured her dog's sweet reaction on camera to hearing the sound of her voice while she was at work.

Dogs miss their owners and there is ample evidence to prove it. A 2011 study published in the journal Applied Animal Behavior Science highlighted how absence makes the heart grow fonder for our four-legged friends.

The experiment saw the reactions of 12 privately-owned dogs with no history of separation anxiety studied on three occasions after being left alone at home. In the first instance, it was after 30 minutes of separation. The second time came after they were separated for two hours and then the third after four hours. Researchers found that the dogs greeted their owners with considerably more energy after two hours apart than they did after just half an hour.

Meanwhile, one woman in Tampa, Florida, doesn't need to conduct any kind of test to see how much her dog Gus misses her when she's away from home—she has video evidence of it.

In a clip captured on a Ring security device back in March, the dog owner showed how her partner has taken to bringing their dog over to the camera to say hello to her while she is at work. The device has a two-way communicator, meaning she's able to say hello back.

"My husband will bring my dog to the ring so he can say hello when I am at work," the woman told Ring. "This time I was able to talk to them and our dog sniffed the Ring!"

Gus certainly appears surprised to hear her voice on the video, reacting with a mixture of confusion and delight at hearing his mom through the tiny doorbell camera.

It's a voice he's likely heard his entire life, so that combination of surprise at hearing, but not seeing his human companion is understandable. One thing appears certain: this dog misses his owner when she is gone.

Anyone in doubt as to whether their dog truly misses them when they are gone could do well to heed the advice of Kait Hembree, the head of training at GoodPup, a dog training company.

Hembree, who is a dog behaviorist, told Newsweek: "Like us, dogs can be quite vocal when it comes to telling us how they feel. Their voice can be expressed through a variety of tones, including barking, whining, grumbling, cooing and even howling."

She shared three key signs your dog might be missing you. In some instances, it might take the form of body language like "entire body tail wags."

"They might paw at their owners or cock their heads with an open, C-shaped mouth similar to a smile," Hembree said.

It might also be that they literally greet you upon your return. She added: "When your dog's right there on the other side of the door to welcome you back or comes from another area seeking you out after hearing your arrival, you can rest assured that it's glad to have you home and missed your companionship."

Alternatively, affection between canine and owner can be communicated through touch.

"If your dog seeks touching from you upon your arrival, such as pressing its body into you, nudging your hand or even jumping on you, that longing for something tangible suggests it missed your touch," Hembree said.
