Fish Recall As Dire Warning Issued Over 'Life-Threatening' Reactions

Batches of fish products are being recalled after a major allergen that can cause life-threatening reactions and is not listed on the packaging was discovered.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a recall warning for two products from Tampa Bay Fisheries after they were found to contain soy. The FDA has warned that people with soy allergies or sensitivities could run the risk of a "life-threatening allergic reaction" if they consume the affected product.

Two batches, one of cod and another of pollock, have been recalled in the warning issued on December 23, 2023.

"Beer Battered Pollock Fillets" in packages of 32 ounces by 365 Whole Foods Market have been recalled. Affected batches have a lot code of 32508201 and a best by date of 03/07/2025. The FDA has said the relevant information can be found on the back of the product packaging. The lot number and best by date can be found on the rear side.

"Beer Batter Cod Fillets" were distributed in 12-ounce cartons with two different lot codes: 32348201 and 32628201. The best by dates on the packaging are 02/22/2025 and 03/19/2025 respectively.

The FDA has clarified that no other batches of the products have been affected, and that any remaining packs have been removed from retail shelves.

As of the recall being initiated, there have been no reported illnesses. It was prompted after the identification of products containing soy that were distributed in packaging that failed to disclose the presence of the allergen.

Anyone who has purchased the affected product can take it to the point of sale for a full refund if they still have a receipt. If that is not possible, the FDA encourages consumers to throw the product away.

For inquiries, consumers can reach out to Tampa Bay Fisheries, Inc. during Monday to Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET, at (800)-SEAFOOD.

Soybeans are one of nine major allergens designated by the FDA. Their must be declared on all food packaging except in limited circumstances.

Food allergies can often lead to unpleasant symptoms that can sometimes be serious. According to the FDA, food-allergy reactions can lead to hives, rashes, swelling, vomiting and/or diarrhea, abdominal cramping, and coughing or wheezing. More serious signs of an allergic reaction to food can include swelling of the throat, difficulty breathing and loss of consciousness.
