Inside Sophia Bush and Ashlyn Harris's Friendship Turned Romance

Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek's network of contributors

Sophia Bush and Ashlyn Harris found themselves drawn into the classic "friendship turned romance" narrative after both experienced the end of their marriages with Grant Hughes and Ali Krieger, respectively.

While there was speculation regarding the timing of their relationship in relation to their previous marriages, Bush recently provided insight into the dynamics of their romance.

In a recent interview with Glamour, she candidly reflected on the challenges within her marriage to Hughes, tracing them back to their wedding day. "In April of 2022, I was close to calling off my wedding. Instead of running away, I doubled down on being a model wife," she revealed.

Following her separation from Hughes in 2023, Bush relocated to L.A. where she found solace in the company of other women facing similar struggles. It was here that her bond with Harris began. Recalling their initial encounter in 2019, Bush noted that Harris was navigating her own separation from her wife.

The Chicago P.D. alum went on to talk about Harris, saying, "She'd been such a kind ear for those of us who opened up about our problems during a shared weekend of speaking engagements at a fancy conference in Cannes, and soon it became clear that she needed our ears too."

Reflecting on the time she and the former soccer player hung out one-on-one together for the first time, she called it "truly one of the most surreal experiences of my life thus far."

Addressing online speculation and criticism, Bush denounced the rumors as "blatant lies" and "violent threats." She continued: "There were accusations of being a home-wrecker. The ones who said I'd left my ex because I suddenly realized I wanted to be with women—my partners have known what I'm into for as long as I have (so that's not it, y'all, sorry!)."

As the timeline goes: the One Tree Hill alum filed for divorce from her ex-husband after 13 months of marriage in August 2023, and Harris split from her ex-wife Krieger, in September 2023.

About a month after Harris' split from Krieger, in October 2023, it was revealed that Harris and Bush had started dating. At the time, Harris spoke out on social media about the online hate she was receiving, calling it "unbearably painful."

"Several weeks ago, a process that had been ongoing privately for some time became public. Ending a relationship after almost 13 years of friendship, teammate-ship, marriage and co-parenting (many of them good years) is a decision that was not made lightly," she wrote via Instagram. "The online hate that has happened since has been one of the most personally devastating experiences of my life."

Harris also addressed the speculation that there was cheating involved. "People have run with a narrative that's unbearably painful. Not all marriages last forever. Ours did not. For many reasons," she wrote. "Let me be clear: I did not stay out of my marriage. I was always faithful in my marriage, if not always totally happy. Like in many partnerships, there was work in therapy and processing done. None of this happened on a whim."

The Drama Queens podcast host and World Champion debuted as a couple at an Oscars party in March 2024 and have since attended various events together, including a women's sports event at Vice President Kamala Harris's residence in the same month.
