Man Shares One Fashion Rule to Elevate Every Outfit: 'Only Style Tip You Need'

A man has shared his simple hack to make an outfit to "level up" your look in one easy step.

Winston Jones (@hangingwithmr.jones) is a fashion fan from New York City who works for popular American brand Ralph Lauren. He has always had a passion for clothing but worked as a mathematics teacher until two years ago, when he came up with an easy way to change up his work outfits, he told Newsweek.

The tip is simple: you choose one item of clothing in your outfit to level up, bringing an extra layer of finesse to the look.

Jones said: "I got the inspiration from thinking how can I make a simplistic thing better. I watch a lot of cartoons and when Mario gets to level up, for example through star power, or whatever the power might be, I thought I can do that with clothing.

"I have a regular baseline outfit that I want to level up, I can do that by changing just one thing," Jones added.

"When you level up one thing, you feel more confident, powerful and better without breaking the bank and from character," he said.

The 26-year-old decided to follow his dreams and quit teaching to follow a fashion career, and he now works in e-commerce for Ralph Lauren.

Jones said he defines his style as inspired by American and English brands through Americana, Ivy League preppy looks and British tailoring.

He added of his idea: "It's the only style tip that you need; ever.

"To one up your outfit is to take one item, and give if it that more intentional care and detail."

The footage starts with Jones in a white vest and black shorts and transitions into a fuller look with a gray sweatshirt, khaki pants and white Converse.

Jones then includes an example; instead of a simple sweatshirt, the stylist might add a knit sweater. Then, he might trade casual cargo pants for pleated chinos to elevate an outfit.

One-upping does not have to break the bank; it is simply choosing one item to elevate, whether that be in color or style.

Jones said his five style icons are: Ralph Lauren, Sidney Poitier, Deion Sanders, Marvin Gaye and Miles Davis.

Jones added: "Getting dressed is a form of self respect; I want to inspire people to love and respect themselves."

TikTok users were impressed with the simple style tip to transform an everyday look with ease.

One posted: "Damn, that's some really good advice."

Another user wrote: "When it comes to sweaters, I think a big thing that really affects the fit is the way that you pull the bottom or not fold it."
