Millennial Cringes Looking Back at Her Wedding Decor: 'We're Divorced Now'

The 2010s were a time when hipster quirk culture ran rampant—and one woman says weddings weren't immune.

In a candid TikTok video, Dakota Dunn (@dakotadunn33) opened up about regrets from her 2015 wedding, calling it "cringe" and sharing photos of the aqua-colored affair that ended in divorce. The video resonated with Millennials near and far on TikTok, going viral with over 572,000 likes and over 2,600 comments.

The video features a carousel of photos from her wedding day with the caption: "POV: You're a millennial who got married in 2015 and everything about your wedding makes you cringe now," followed by the admission, "We're divorced now."

The photos from the aqua-drenched woman show Dunn and her groom in Chacos footwear and showcase a "corporate retreat-looking banner" with a pun for her new married name.

"I just had to be different," she wrote in the video.

Reflecting on her wedding planning experience, Dunn told Newsweek that she was operating on a tight budget, with her father providing $5,000 for the entire event. With limited funds, she took on the challenges of wedding planning, opting for a beach-themed aesthetic. She said the experience was overwhelming.

"I honestly hated planning my wedding because it was so stressful," she said. "I tried to back out and elope halfway through, but basically I couldn't because the deposits were paid."

One of the standout features of Dunn's wedding was the unconventional footwear choice: both she and her ex-husband sported Chaco sandals, a nod to their first conversation about the outdoor footwear brand. Dunn said she wanted a relaxed and non-traditional atmosphere and opted for an outdoor ceremony—which got rained out.

Despite all this, Dunn said she remembers her feelings on the day itself being positive. But in retrospect, with the passage of time and the eventual dissolution of her marriage, Dunn's feelings have turned sourer.

"I am divorced—been divorced since 2018, so looking back at the photos I feel extra cringe because I don't want that man anymore," Dakota said. "I kind of look back and think, what was I thinking?"

Dunn's video sparked a similar reaction in viewers, but one was more sympathetic than others: "My friend has a killer perspective on this," @courtneyecherd wrote.
