Salmonella is the most common cause of food poisoning in the U.S. and can produce unpleasant symptoms, including fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pains. While the infection usually clears up within several days without medical intervention, elderly people, young children and those with compromised immune systems can suffer from more serious and sometimes fatal infections, according to the USDA.

In rare instances, a severe case of salmonella can infect the bloodstream and cause arterial infections, endocarditis and arthritis. However, no illnesses have been reported so far in connection with the recall.

Monday's recall is not the first related to potential salmonella contamination this month. Cream cheese products produced by Hy-Vee and Schnucks and distributed in numerous states have both been recalled for this reason.
