Actress and comedian Tiffany Haddish shared an emotional reunion with her high school drama teacher on Tuesday's episode of ABC's morning talk show "The View".
Haddish was appearing on the show to promote her new book, "I Curse You With Joy", and she spoke about the impact her high school drama teacher Ms. Greeve had on her - not knowing she was waiting backstage.
"She figured out that I couldn't read really, like I was very good at hiding and masking and pretending," Haddish said. "And she figured out that I couldn't do it very well or barely at all, so she would have me come to her class during lunch and nutrition, which was like that 15 minute break, and I would read to her."
Haddish said Greeve would sit with her as she read newspapers and magazines, and by the end of semester, her reading skills improved.
The two remained in contact through Facebook and spoke on the phone once, but the last time they saw each other in person was 25 years ago.
"It sounds like a reunion is a little overdue," host Sara Haines said before introducing Greeve.
After the two embraced, Greeve gave Haddish a copy of "All in the Timing," which is a play Haddish did in high school and a photo of her when she was in high school.
"This is my first time getting professional makeup done," Haddish said as she showed the photo.
Haddish teared up as she thanked Greeve.
"Thank you so much for being patient with me. Thank you so much for always encouraging me and taking time with me and listening to me," Haddish said. "You have no idea, like during that time I was struggling a lot, and you [were] like the most consistent, constant thing in my world next to my grandma. And I'm so grateful for you and I'm so glad God made you. And thank you so much for being kind."
When Haddish was in high school, she won a drama contest with a reading from "A Midsummer Night's Dream," which is also one of Greeve's favorite plays. In honor of Teacher Appreciation Week, "The View" gifted Greeve with a limited edition leather-bound copy.
