What are Silver Alerts?

Indiana issues Silver Alerts for missing endangered adults, missing endangered children, high risk missing people and people with a mental impairment verified by a medical professional. Unlike Amber Alerts, the missing person does not have to be under 18 years old to issue the alert.

One criteria for Silver Alerts is that a medical professional must review the missing person's medical conditions and sign off that they believe the health and conditions of the missing person would make them endangered.

The state has issued 19 Silver Alerts so far this year, and 18 of those individuals have been located.

Last year, Silver Alerts were issued for 79 missing people and they were all located, with three found dead. Since 2009, 874 alerts have been issued statewide, and 830 people have been located.

Criteria for Silver Alerts can vary by state. A Silver Alert program exists in 28 states. In some states, Silver Alerts are exclusively for missing people over the age of 65 who have been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, dementia or a mental disability.
