Ever since 1937, when Disney Studios released Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Disney has had a hold over cinema-lovers.

Be it animated classics like The Jungle Book and Cinderella, live action remakes of... well, The Jungle Book and Cinderella, or modern day faourites including Ratatouille and Inside Out—a Disney movie means cash will be splashed at the box office.

With Disney acquiring Marvel in 2009 and Lucasfilm in 2012, the studios have even more box office juggernauts under their belts.

Below, we look at Disney's top 20 highest-grossing movies of all time at box office, using worldwide figures from movie database The Numbers.

20. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest

$1,066,179,747

The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise has been extremely lucrative for Disney, and the second installment, Dead Man's Chest, became the highest grossing movie of 2006.

The swashbuckler starring Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley also became the fastest film at the time to gross over $1 billion at the box office.

19. Toy Story 3

Toy Story 3 didn't just make all of us cry, it was Pixar's highest-grossing film to date at the time.

The computer-animated film, released in 2010, saw Woody, Buzz and co accidentally donated to a daycare centre when Andy went off to college.

It was nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars and passed the billion dollar mark at the box office. It was also one of the most expensive animated films ever made.

18. Toy Story 4

After nine years away, the toys made a triumphant return as we watched them adjust to life with Bonnie and a new toy named Forky, voiced by Tony Hale.

Gaining critical acclaim, it won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature.

17. Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker

2019's The Rise of Skywalker marked the end of the nine-part Skywalker saga, but it received mixed reviews upon release.

The first of the Marvel superhero movies to make the list, 2019's Captain Marvel is Marvel's first female-led film.

The blockbuster, starring Brie Larson, will be followed by The Marvels in 2022.

14. Captain America: Civil War

The 2016 sequel to Captain America and Captain America: Winter Soldier was the most successful of the trilogy, and was also that year's highest grossing film.

While it is believed Chris Evans has hung up his shield, a fourth film starring Anthony Mackie is in the works.

13. Iron Man 3

Three is a magic number, and the third Iron Man is the most successful of the bunch.

The seventh film in the MCU, starring Robert Downey Jr. as the titular hero, aka Tony Stark received Best Visual Effects nominations at the Academy Awards and the BAFTA Awards.

12. Incredibles 2

After 14 years away, The Incredibles returned to our screens in 2018 to critical acclaim.

Incredibles 2 is Pixar's highest grossing film, and received an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature.

11. Beauty and the Beast

Disney remade its 1991 animated classic Beauty and the Beast in 2017, with Emma Watson playing Belle and Dan Stevens as Beast.

While live-action remakes might not be everyone's cup of tea, the film was a huge success and was praised for being faithful to the original.

Will we ever let this one go? Unlikely.

Not only did Frozen become the highest-grossing animated film of all time (at the time) when it was released in 2013, it has become a cultural phenomenon and the bane of every parent's life.

9. Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi

The Last Jedi divided opinion amongst fans when it was released in 2017, but there were no problems at the box office.

The second-last film in the Skywalker saga is the second highest grossing Star Wars film ever, and received four Oscar nominations.

8. Black Panther

Black Panther broke many records upon its release in 2018, including becoming the highest-grossing film directed by a Black filmmaker, and the first superhero film to be nominated for the Best Picture Oscar.

A sequel, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, is in the works, but sadly will not feature T'Challa, with actor Chadwick Boseman having died in 2020, aged 43.

7. Avengers: Age of Ultron

The 2015 sequel to Avengers may not have outdone the original, but the ensemble superhero film still managed to break the top 10 highest-grossing films.

In the film, which is believed to be the second most expensive ever made, the Avengers face off against Ultron, an artificial intelligence obsessed with causing human extinction.

6. Frozen 2

By the time the Frozen sequel rocked around in 2019, a generation was obsessed with Elsa and Anna, so it was bound to be a success.

As well as receiving positive reviews, Frozen 2 received a Best Original Song Oscar nomination for "Into The Unknown."

5. The Avengers

The ensemble film that started it all.

2012's The Avengers saw Nick Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D. recruit Tony Stark, Steve Rogers, Bruce Banner and Thor to form a team capable of stopping Thor's brother Loki from subjugating Earth, and caused a major splash at the box office.

4. The Lion King

The 2019 live-action remake has edged out the original The Lion King, becoming the highest-grossing animated film of all time.

The extremely expensive remake featured an all-star voice cast, including Beyoncé, Donald Glover, Seth Rogen, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Billy Eichner and John Oliver, with James Earl Jones returning as Mufasa.

3. Avengers: Infinity War

The 2018 blockbuster saw the Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy team up to stop Thanos from collecting the Infinity Stones, and ended on a major cliffhanger.

The tension paid off, as Infinity War became the first superhero film to cross the $2 billion mark.

Three years after Disney acquired Lucasfilm, the first installment in the Star Wars sequel trilogy was released in 2015, and they must have been pretty happy with their decision.

The Force Awakens introduced us to Rey (Daisy Ridley), Finn (John Boyega) and Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) and saw Han Solo (Harrison Ford), Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher) and Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) return to the big screen, and was a critical and commercial hit.

Not only is Endgame Disney's biggest-ever film, it's also the second biggest film of all time, just behind Avatar.

Focusing on the surviving members of the Avengers trying to reverse the damage of Thanos' snap, the 2019 film was a culmination of the prior 22 films in the MCU, and featured the end of many characters' story arcs.
