Christina Applegate's Tear-Jerking Hollywood Walk of Fame Speech in Full

Christina Applegate received her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Monday, celebrating her accomplished acting career, which has spanned over 40 years.

The ceremony also marked her first public appearance since she received her multiple sclerosis diagnosis (MS) in 2021, and she did not shy away from addressing her health issues in an incredibly moving speech.

Multiple sclerosis is a lifelong condition that can affect the brain and spinal cord, causing a variety of symptoms such as mobility issues, partial or complete loss of vision and balance issues.

With her friends and family by her side, including Married...With Children's Katey Sagal and David Faustino, Legally Blonde's Selma Blair and her Dead to Me co-star, Linda Cardellini, Applegate also celebrated the official naming of November 14 as "Christina Applegate Day" in Hollywood.

Her speech has left her fans teary-eyed as Applegate reflected on the highs and lows of her career. She also spoke a little about the impact MS has had on her life.

Newsweek has her speech in full below.

"I've had a really interesting life," Applegate began her speech. "But the life started as a little girl waiting in line to see the first Star Wars on this very street at that very theater. And looking at these things [the stars] and going, 'Who are these people? What are these things? Did they do something right? Did they do something wrong? Whatever it is, I want one. I effing want one.'

"And I was 5 years old. So this day means more to me than you can possibly imagine."

Referring to MS, she said: "I can't stand for too long so I'm going to thank the people I really need to thank."

"First of all, to my family who have spoken here today," referring to Sagal, Faustino, Cardellini, and Dead to Me creator Liz Feldman who gave touching speeches about Applegate earlier in the ceremony.

Applegate continued, addressing her Married...with Children co-stars Sagal and Faustino: "You are my everything. I love that I started with you two and ended with you two and I thank you so much from the bottom of my heart. You are my people. You are my loves.

"My mom used to say changing agents is like changing deck chairs on the Titanic. I've stuck with mine, so I guess we're going down all together.

"I don't say that I have friends, I have a family. These people take care of me. They take care of me every day of my life and without them, I don't know what I would do."

Applegate became visibly emotional when she addressed her 11-year-old daughter, Sadie.

"And lastly, the most important person in this world is my daughter," she said. "You are so much more than even you know. You are so beautiful and kind and loving and smart and interesting and I am blessed every day that I get to wake up and take you to your school. You are my everything. Thank you for standing beside me through all of this."

She ended her speech with a witty comment about her health problems, stating: "Oh, by the way, I have a disease. Did you not notice? I'm not wearing shoes! Anywho, you're supposed to laugh at that."

After shouting out her husband Martyn LeNoble and her family, Applegate said: "Thank you so much, this is an incredible honor."

Applegate shared her MS diagnosis on August 10, 2021, revealing she had been diagnosed earlier in the summer.

She tweeted: "Hi friends. A few months ago I was diagnosed with MS. It's been a strange journey. But I have been so supported by people that I know who also have this condition.

"It's been a tough road. But as we all know, the road keeps going. Unless some a***** blocks it.

"As one of my friends that has MS said, 'We wake up and take the indicated action' And that's what I do. So now I ask for privacy. As I go through this thing. Thank you."

Before the ceremony, Applegate teased to her fans in October 2022 she had a "very important ceremony" coming up and asked them to help choose a walking stick for the occasion.

Alongside an image of five canes, Applegate wrote: "This will be my first time out since diagnosed with MS. Walking sticks are now part of my new normal."

Applegate will next be seen in the final season of Dead to Me, which is set to hit Netflix on Thursday, November 17.

Her other well-known credits include Jesse, Friends, Samantha Who?, Anchorman, Bad Moms, and Up All Night.
