Moment Couple Realizes There's a Big Issue With $4K Couch in New Apartment

A woman has shared footage of the moment she and her boyfriend realized there was a big problem with the $4,000 couch they paid to have transported thousands of miles from their previous home.

When it comes to living with a partner, the topic of furniture has been known to lead to the occasional argument. A survey of 2,000 U.S. adults conducted by the online furniture company Article found that the average couple has around 72 disagreements a year on the topics of furniture and décor. That equates to more than one disagreement a week.

Fortunately, Sophie Fonte and her boyfriend were firmly in agreement when it comes to their couch. Unfortunately that agreement seemed to be that it was way too big for their new apartment in Santa Monica.

The couple recently moved cross-country from Ohio to California and shelled out a significant sum of money to bring the couch with them. However, as Fonte highlighted in the video posted to TikTok under the handle hotdillpickle, there was problem. "Watch us realize the couch we paid $2k to move 2,000 miles is too big for our new apartment," an onscreen caption reads.

In the video, Fonte and her boyfriend can be seen attempting to fit the two L-shaped seats that comprise the couch into a modestly sized lounge area. They try out several configurations before finally settling on a setup that leaves them sitting noticeably close to where their television was going to be set up.

It's clear from the expression on both the faces of Fonte and her partner that this is far from ideal. Fonte appears eager to make the best of it though, describing the arrangement of the room as "cozy." You can watch the video here.

It may not have made for the best of starts to life in their new pad, but the footage of them trying to fit the couch in has proven popular on social media. At the time of writing, it's already been watched 12.1 million times on TikTok, with viewers flocking to comment on the situation.

Many were quick to offer advice on how to fix the situation. One user wrote: "Could definitely remove a section and use it in another room as a chair, makes it less oversized for the space."

Another suggested: "Wall mount the TV and lose the giant wooden stand or whatever that is." One had an entirely different suggestion. "I would've sold the couch before you moved, then you could've took the money from the sale plus the 2k you spent shipping it and bought a really nice," they wrote.

Fonte was clearly in no mood to entertain the idea of selling the couch though, explaining in another comment that it cost around $4,000 brand new. The $2,000 shelled out was spent on moving all of their possessions too, not just the couch.

Many commenting on the clip were also critical of Fonte for failing to properly measure the floor space of their new apartment. However, in a follow-up video she explained that they had been unable to properly view the apartment before moving as they lived 2,000 miles away and that their landlord had also been unable to provide a floor plan.

Though it may have proven a source of frustration at the time, the good news is that Fonte and her boyfriend were able to work out a way to configure the room to fit their beloved couch in. You can see the results here.

Fonte is certainly happy with the results, telling viewers: "I think it turned out really cute...it's cozy and doesn't overwhelm the space anymore."

Newsweek reached out to Fonte on TikTok for comment.
