Freeze Advice For 9 States as Temperatures Drop

Frost advisories were issued across a small number of states Monday by the National Weather Service, as cold weather swept across northwest and eastern regions of the U.S..

Temperatures were forecast to drop to freezing or near freezing in parts of Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, North Carolina and Kentucky.

The NWS forecast said that frost formation was likely in those areas and advised people to "take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold."

The advisory is in effect from late Monday until early Tuesday morning.

Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island

Temperatures could plunge as low as 28 degrees Fahrenheit in parts of northern Connecticut, eastern and southeastern Massachusetts, and northern and southern Rhode Island. The following cities are impacted: Falmouth, Foster, Providence, Warwick, Vernon, West Warwick, Fall River, Chatham, Hartford, Smithfield, West Greenwich, New Bedford, Quincy, New Shoreham, Plymouth, Brockton, Westerly, Putnam, Norwood, Willimantic, Narragansett, Provincetown, Coventry, East Greenwich, Windsor Locks, Mattapoisett, Vineyard Haven, Newport, Foxborough, Taunton, Bristol, and Union.

Temperatures into the mid-thirties are also forecast in parts of southern Connecticut.

New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania

Temperatures as low as 33 degrees will impact portions of central, northern and northwest New Jersey and east central and southeast Pennsylvania. This includes the cities of Newton, Washington, Morristown, Flemington, Somerville, New Brunswick, Trenton, Reading, Allentown, Bethlehem, Easton, Media, Honey Brook, Oxford, West Chester, Kennett Square, Collegeville, Pottstown, Norristown, Lansdale, Chalfont, Perkasie, Morrisville, and Doylestown.

Temperatures into the mid-thirties are also forecast in parts of southeast New York.

Virginia, Kentucky and North Carolina

Temperatures as low as 35 degrees Fahrenheit are forecast in parts of northeast North Carolina and central, east central, north central, south central and southeast Virginia. This includes the cities of Margarettsville, Ahoskie, Cunningham, Lake Monticello, Nahor, Palmyra, Troy, Farmville, Angola, Guinea Mills, Hawk, Raines Tavern, Reeds, Stoddert, Goochland, Corbin, Burruss Corner, Cedar Fork, Dawn, South Hill, Fort Mitchell, Kells Corner, Arvins Store, Loves Mill, Lunenburg, Nutbush, Rehoboth, Crewe, Earls, Mannboro, Scotts Fork, Amelia Courthouse, Chula, Denaro, Jetersville, Fine Creek Mills, Flat Rock, Goodwins Store, Subletts, Worshams, Clayville, Genito, Lawrenceville, Reams, Petersburg, Hopewell, Barnetts, Wayside, Roxbury, Bottoms Bridge, Browns Corner, Mountcastle, New Kent Airport, Orapax Farms, Quinton, Talleysville, Emporia, Wakefield, Barham, Gwaltney Corner, Bacons Castle, Chippokes State Park, Hog Island Game Reserve, Poolesville, Booth Fork, Franklin, Louisa, Mineral, Ashland, Mechanicsville, Bon Air, Midlothian, Chesterfield, Chester, Colonial Heights, Richmond, Sandston, Aylett, King William, West Point, Beazley, Biscoe, Henley Fork, Indian Neck, Newtown, Owenton, Saint Stephens Church, King And Queen Court House, Tappahannock, and Dunnsville.

The NWS added that temperatures are forecast to "bottom out near 32 degrees" in parts of east central, northeast, south central, and southeast Kentucky.
