Full-On Drama as Golden Retriever Enters His 'Refuse to Get Up Era'

A young golden retriever's new habit of protesting on walks has left his owners, and the Instagram viewers, in stitches.

One-year-old Summit lives with his owner in San Diego and has developed a funny new habit—flopping down on the ground when he's had enough. Owner Jenny Barnes shared the video of the dog refusing to budge after deciding he's done walking for the day.

Summit's protests have become a daily occurrence, Barnes told Newsweek, and it now often takes three attempts just to leave their neighborhood.

"Summit started doing it a few weeks ago, and now it takes three tries for us to get out of our neighborhood every day," Barnes said. "He doesn't want to get up."

Under the handle @bakerbarnes on Instagram, Barnes shares plenty of Summit's antics, from having playdates with canine friends to taking boat trips and spending time with his owners.

Viewed more than 77,000 times, the latest video shows the moment Summit takes an executed tumble in protest.

In the caption, Barnes joked: "The drama is real!" A text overlay read: "My dog is in his 'Fall to the ground and refuse to get up' era.

Viewers thought it was hilarious and shared their reactions in the comments.

"He's over it," said one commenter, while another viewer wrote, "So dramatic!"

Barnes was delighted by the reactions and has since guessed that Summit's new habit might have something to do with his age. At a year and a half, the golden retriever is around 15 to 19 years old in human years.

The "adolescent stage" for dogs is usually between the ages of 6 months and 2 years and can mean dogs undergo behavioral changes similar to those experienced by human teenagers, including rebellion, increased energy and mood swings.

"We've gotten tons of laughs, and it seems like a lot of other dog owners, especially golden owners, can relate to this stubborn teenage period," Barnes said.

This isn't the first time a golden retriever has decided to vote with his paw during a walk. In October, a video went viral after a retired Marine said that his golden retriever will play dead and refuses to budge when he doesn't want to go home.

In the video, viewed 52 million times, the owner was forced to pick up his dog and carry him.
