Full List of Mike Johnson Vote Losses as House Speaker

Republican leadership in the House of Representatives has lost five votes since Mike Johnson became speaker on October 25 last year, official roll calls show, despite retaining a majority.

On Tuesday, Johnson presided over the loss of two votes in one night, sparking renewed criticism from some of his colleagues.

His attempt to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas over the immigration situation at the southern border fell short by a single vote, while his attempt to separate aid for Israel from funding for Ukraine was shot down by bipartisan opposition.

Additionally, to avoid a government shutdown, Johnson had to rely on the support of Democrats to get a continuing resolution passed, further exposing the GOP division in Congress.

The latest failures raised questions about whether his party would seek to oust him as they did his predecessor, Kevin McCarthy, last year. However, experts and some Republican lawmakers have suggested his fate will be decided by the outcome of November's election.

Here is a full list of votes that have gone against measures supported by Johnson since he was elected speaker, excluding amendments brought by individual Republican lawmakers:

  • November 15, 2023: On agreeing to House Resolution 869 to provide consideration for the H.R. 5893 appropriations bill and the H.R. 5961 on Iranian assets. Lost in a vote of 225 to 198, with 19 Republicans voting against. H.R. 5961 was later passed.
  • December 1, 2023: On the expulsion of George Santos from the House. The vote passed 311 to 114, with Johnson among those opposing but 105 Republicans voting for the motion.
  • January 10, 2024: On agreeing to H.R. 947. Lost 216 votes to 203, with 13 Republicans voting against.
  • February 6, 2024: To impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. Lost 216 votes to 214, with four Republicans voting against.
  • February 6, 2024: To appropriate funding for Israel as 250 voted in favor, including 46 Republicans, while 180 voted against, including 14 Republicans. The motion failed as it required a two-thirds majority.

An eight-second clip of Johnson announcing the result of the Mayorkas vote was shared on X, formerly Twitter, by Ron Filipkowski, editor-in-chief of self-styled "pro-democracy" media outlet Meidas Touch.

In the footage, Johnson says "the resolution is not adopted" before receiving a written note and repeatedly banging down his gavel. Filipkowski added: "U mad, bro?"

The video has received more than 160,000 views and 5,300 likes from X users.

Johnson rejected blame on Wednesday. While speaking to reporters, he was asked how he would respond to critics that the current state of Congress is because of his "inexperience," to which he responded: "I don't think that this is a reflection on the leader, I think this is a reflection on the body itself.

"The nation is divided, we lament that. The difference is the chasm between the two parties right now is wider than it's ever been and there's lots of emotions. The process is messy sometimes, but the job will be done."
