Who Is Midnight Man? Gaspard Ulliel's 'Moon Knight' Character Explained

Moon Knight introduces several characters into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), one of whom is Anton Mogart, aka Midnight Man.

Played by the late Gaspard Ulliel, who died in January 2022 after a tragic skiing accident, Mogart is an adversary to Oscar Isaac's eponymous superhero.

Ulliel does not appear in the first two episodes of Moon Knight as the character, but will make his posthumous Marvel debut in the forthcoming episodes.

Here is everything you need to know about the character.

Who Is Gaspard Ulliel's Character Anton Mogart?

Anton Mogart first appeared in the Moon Knight Marvel comics in October 1981 in the third issue of the series.

Like Isaac's dual character, Steven Grant and Marc Spector, Mogart was created by Doug Moench and Bill Sienkiewicz.

Mogart is an art thief who enjoys the finer things in life, and he lives luxuriously as a result of the criminal acts he commits under the alter-ego Midnight Man.

In the comics, Midnight Man encounters Moon Knight on multiple occasions, and, per Inverse, one such fight with the hero and Mogart's ally-turned-betrayer Raul Bushman leads to the villain being pushed in a sewer where he suffers permanent damage to his mouth.

The character later learns that he has cancer and upon his death, the Midnight Man moniker is passed down to his illegitimate son Jeff Wilde.

Wilde changes his alter-ego name to Midnight and becomes an ally to Moon Knight for a time in the comics.

What Are Midnight Man's Powers?

Unlike Moon Knight, Midnight Man doesn't have any supernatural powers to speak of but that doesn't make him any less of an interesting villain.

The character is skilled at stealing, as shown by his art thief profession, and he is also adept at martial arts.

Mogart uses a dagger and a handgun during his escapades as Midnight Man, and the former is of particular use when he is stealing art.

Will Anton Mogart, aka Midnight Man, Be Recast in 'Moon Knight'?

Sadly Ulliel's untimely passing means that Mogart is unlikely to appear in a future season of Moon Knight, should it be renewed for a second one.

What Mogart's fate will be in the series is unclear as it is not yet known how showrunners intended the character to encounter Isaac's Moon Knight.

Marvel has not commented publicly on its plans for the character, nor has the company commented on if it would consider recasting the role.

However, given the character's story in the comics, it may be that Marvel choose to introduce Wilde as a way to explain Mogart's absence and remain respectful to the late French actor's memory.
