How To Tell a Millennial From Gen Z by How They Style Their Scarf

A fashion content creator has sparked conversation after sharing the difference between how millennials and Gen Z style—a scarf.

With a huge 5.4 million views, the video by @noahaltink showed him trying on two different scarf styles, attributing one to Millennials—born between 1981 and 1996—and Gen Z—born between 1997 and 2012.

Altink's video prompted serious discussion in the comments where people gave their thoughts on the generational differences in accessory styling.

"Depends on the scarf, weather and function," said one commenter. While another said: "I did both of these in 2009."

Others couldn't relate at all. One viewer said: "I do neither."

Fashion expert and adviser Samantha Harman weighed in on the accessorizing debate.

"Clothing forms a huge part of our identity, so it's understandable we want to put our own stamp on 'traditional' items as we figure out who we are," Harman told Newsweek.

"And what generation doesn't think they can do things better than the one before? When it comes to style, Gen Z is lucky to have something Millennials didn't have, which is social media like TikTok."

While millennials may have missed out on social media platforms like TikTok during their formative years, they now have the opportunity to explore and experiment with trends.

"The accessibility of social media has democratized style, allowing everyone, regardless of size, shape, or gender, to participate in the conversation," said Harman.

"Even my 85-year-old nan is on the socials loving all the styling content. So if you're one of the Millennials who likes to tell me you're 'past it' for style, my nan has 50 years on you and she's not saying that."

This isn't the first time generational style has prompted discussion online. Earlier this year, TikToker @nicolestorydent filmed herself coming across clothes straight out of the 1990s and early 2000s while shopping for kids clothes.

While makeup experts have weighed in on if you can tell a Gen Z from a Millennial from their use of one popular cosmetic item.

Mostly though, replies on the viral video were from people who said they didn't really consider how their scarf was tied.

"As a Millennial I'm not styling a scarf," said Moe. "I'm just cold and tossing one on."

While viewer Gabrielle said: "I flip it over my shoulder and hope for the best."

"I do both as a Millennial," said jessicakanyaalter, before adding: "Why do we have to divide everything?"
