What is The Earthshot Prize?

Prince William's environmental initiative, the Earthshot Prize was launched in 2020 and held its inaugural award ceremony in October 2021.

The prize helps to identify, promote and fund the solutions to help repair the planet over the course of the next ten years.

Each year, five solution "earthshots" are selected and awarded a cash sum of £1 million ($1,196,870) to assist in the scaling up of their initiatives. The five Earthshot goals are: Protect and restore nature; Clean our air; Revive our oceans; Build a waste-free world; Fix our climate.

The Earthshot Prize finalists and winners are selected by a rotating committee of environmental experts and activists and business industrialists.

Boston was chosen as the host city for the second awards ceremony in tribute to President John F. Kennedy, whose 1962 "moonshot" speech served as direct inspiration for the name and spirit of the prize.
