MAGA's Hope To Remove Joe Biden Faces Major Obstacles

Efforts to remove President Joe Biden from office under the 25th Amendment will be challenging as it would require members of his own party to unite against him.

Questions about the president's mental capabilities re-emerged after Special Counsel Robert Hur released a report Thursday on the classified documents found at Biden's home in Delaware and his Penn Biden Center office in Washington D.C. The special counsel declined to prosecute him for mishandling classified documents, but raised questions about his mental fitness and called him "a well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory."

At a press conference Biden held to defend himself following the publication of the report, he mixed up two politicians.

"As you know, initially, the president of Mexico, el-Sisi, did not want to open up the gate to allow humanitarian material to get in," Biden said, referring to Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, in response to a question on the situation in Gaza.

Calls To Remove Biden From Office

In light of the report and Biden's press conference, some Republican and MAGA figures have criticized the president. They've sought to invoke the 25th Amendment which sets out the procedure for replacing the president in the event of death, removal, resignation, or incapacitation.

Newsweek contacted a representative for Biden by email to comment on this story.

Writing on X, formerly Twitter, Georgia Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene called Biden "unfit."

She said: "Joe Biden isn't capable to stand trial for all of the classified documents he stole after leaving office as a Senator and VP, yet he's capable of carrying around the nuclear football?

"Joe Biden is unfit to serve as POTUS!

"Two solutions: 25th Amendment or impeachment."

Conservative political activist Laura Loomer wrote: "25th AMENDMENT NOW!"

Missouri Republican Josh Hawley wrote: "Who will be the first patriotic Democrat in Congress to state the obvious and - for the good of the country - invoke the 25th Amendment."

The 25th Amendment Explained

However, invoking the 25th Amendment would require the support of Vice President Kamala Harris and Biden's Democratic cabinet. The group, which endorsed Biden's bid for a second term, would have to agree the president is "unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office," according to Section 4 of the 25th Amendment.

If that were agreed, two-thirds majorities of both the House of Representatives and the Senate would then have to vote and approve of stripping the president of his powers.

Speaking to Newsweek, Christopher Phelps, a professor of modern American history at the University of Nottingham in the U.K., said "the chances of the 25th Amendment being invoked are zero."

"Biden is doubtless prone to errors of recollection, and that has led the public to have reservations about his vigor and acuity," he said. "It is frustrating to Democrats that a narrative about this has fixed to Biden exclusively—even though his opponent Donald Trump, who is almost as old, has also been making many similar errors recently.

"It would take Biden's own vice president, Kamala Harris, and a majority of his cabinet to invoke the 25th Amendment. But those who work with Biden every day on a regular basis, including aides and Senators, vow that he is sharp and tireless.

"The chances of the 25th Amendment being invoked are zero."
