Steve Bannon Calls for New House Probe Into Joe Biden's 'Dementia'

Steve Bannon called on the House of Representatives to investigate President Joe Biden's "dementia" after Special Counsel Robert Hur's report into his classified documents questioned his mental fitness.

On Thursday, Hur released a report declining to prosecute Biden for mishandling classified documents after leaving the White House in 2017 after his tenure as vice president under President Barack Obama, but sparked new concerns about his memory, writing that Biden did not remember when his son died or when he served as vice president.

"In his interview with our office, Mr. Biden's memory was worse. He did not remember when he was vice president, forgetting on the first day of the interview when his term ended ("if it was 2013 - when did I stop being Vice President?"), and forgetting on the second day of the interview when his term began ("in 2009, am I still Vice President?")," the report stated. "He did not remember, even within several years, when his son Beau died. And his memory appeared hazy when describing the Afghanistan debate that was once so important to him."

Biden's cognitive ability has emerged as a crucial issue amid the 2024 presidential race as he runs for reelection. His critics have raised concerns about whether the 81-year-old remains fit to serve as president, pointing to a number of gaffes he has made in speeches throughout his time as commander-in-chief.

These critics quickly highlighted the report to use as new evidence to back up their claims about Biden's cognitive ability, however Biden has maintained he remains mentally fit to serve a second term as president, hitting out at the report during a press conference after its release.

Bannon, a staunch conservative who served as an adviser to former President Donald Trump during his time in the White House, called for an investigation into Biden's cognitive ability in a post to conservative social media platform Gettr on Thursday night.

"House Needs too Open Investigation on Biden's Dementia," he wrote.

Newsweek reached out to the White House for comment via email.

Biden slammed the report during a press conference Thursday evening, telling reporters, "I know what the hell I'm doing."

He added: "I don't need anyone to remind me when he passed away. Every Memorial Day we hold a service [to] remember him attended by friends and family and the people who loved him. I don't need anyone—I don't need anyone to remind me when he passed away."

Meanwhile, the most recent report into Biden's health from his physician, Kevin O'Connor, found that Biden "remains fit for duty" and "fully executes all of his responsibilities without any exemptions or accommodations." The report did not outline any signs of dementia or cognitive decline.

"President Biden remains a healthy, vigorous, 80-year-old male, who is fit to successfully execute the duties of the Presidency," O'Connor wrote last February.
